Folate is vitamin B9, a nutrient the body needs for making new cells, and it is one of the few supplements with a near-universal recommendation: women of reproductive age are advised to take it daily, because adequate folate in early pregnancy supports healthy fetal development and the body’s need for it rises as a pregnancy begins.
